Academy 12492 P-47D Thunderbolt Razorback, Multicolor

The P-47D Thunderbolt, a workhorse of the U.S. Army Air Force during the latter half of World War II, saw action in both the European and Pacific theaters of the war. With its impressive 2,000 horsepower R-2800 "Double Wasp" engine and exhaust turbine, the aircraft was necessarily large and heavy, but these features did not impede its high performance. Utilized not only as an escort to U.S. bombers, the P-47D's bomb load capacity also made it an outstanding ground attack aircraft.

The Thunderbolt's sheer production numbers are a testament to its significance, with nearly 12,602 'D' models built, the largest total of any single fighter sub-type in history. The total production of the P-47 amounted to a staggering 15,660 units. Even after the war, the P-47 remained popular with many air forces well into the 1950s.
